tapeworms
TAPEWORMS feed on blood, tissue fluids, or pieces of cells inside the bodies of their hosts. Tapeworms have no digestive tract at all. Instead, they live inside the intestines of their hosts and feed by latching onto the intestinal wall with hooks and/or suckers and absorbing the food that passes by. This food has already been broken down by the host's digestive enzymes. The worms absorb this food through their body walls, allowing them to grow to impressive sizes. Adult human tapeworms have been measured over 18 meters long! Tapeworms almost never kill their hosts, but they do eat up a lot of food. This is why hosts may lose weight and become weak. A single worm can produce more than 500,000 eggs each year! Did I mention that undercooked meat, particularly pork meat is a perfect way to get them?

ROUNDWORMS
ROUNDWORMS infect one billion people according to the World Health Organization. One billion! One of the reasons puppies are wormed while they are young is to rid them of the roundworms that affects dogs. Any food or water contaminated with the feces of infected humans or animals carries the eggs which hatch in the small intestine of the new host. Adult worms generally live in the intestines, where they produce up to 200,000 eggs a day. They can multiply so quickly that it is not uncommon to create intestinal blockages. Imagine a ball of worms plugging up your intestine. Nasty! Be very disciplined about washing your hands after you have been around any form of feces and after you have played with your animals. Anytime you are in a public place, even touching a grocery cart, wash your hands before you eat.

HOOKWORMS
HOOKWORMS are serious human intestinal parasites that are often found in the Southern United States and are common in tropical countries. As many as one fourth of people in the world today are infected with hookworms! Hookworm eggs hatch outside the body of the host and develop in the soil. If they find an unprotected foot, they use sharp teeth and hooks to burrow into the skin and enter the bloodstream. Like roundworms, these worms travel through the blood to the lungs and then down the throat to the intestines. There the adult worms dig into the intestinal wall and suck the blood of the host. These worms can devour enough blood to cause weakness and stunt growth.

PINWORMS
PINWORMS are quite common in humans, especially in children. Some countries show an infection rate as high as 61% according to the Center of Disease Control. Human pinworms are one of the most prevalent parasitic infections in modern countries. The pinworm infections are passed on by touching things that have previously been touched by infected individuals, or people who have previously touched a pin worm infected area and picked up the pin worm eggs on their fingers. One third of people infected with pinworms show no symptoms at all. The other two thirds have symptoms such as itching in and around the anus, insomnia and general restlessness. Pinworms are easily passed from one family member to another.

TRICHENELLA
TRICHENELLA is a roundworm that causes the terrible disease known as Trichinosis. The adult worms, which are hard to see without a microscope, live and mate in the intestines of the host. Females carrying fertilized eggs burrow into the intestinal wall, where each one releases up to 1500 larvae. These larvae travel through the blood stream until they eventually exit via small blood vessels, and then burrow into organs and tissues. This causes terrible pain for the host. The larvae then form cysts in the host's muscle tissues and become inactive. The only way these encysted worms can complete their life cycle is if infected muscle tissue is eaten. Two very common hosts for Trichinella are rats and pigs. Humans get Trichinosis almost exclusively by eating raw or incompletely cooked pork (or rat). Just say NO to the other white meat!
