Thyroid Support Remedy

Your thyroid gland is a small gland, normally weighing less than one ounce, yet it has influence on every cell of your body. Some consider it to be the most important gland in the modern world because 98% of the tested population have some undiagnosed trouble with it. It is located in the front of the neck and is made up of two halves, called lobes, which lay along the windpipe (trachea) and are joined together by a narrow band of thyroid tissue known as the isthmus. You will find the thyroid just below your "Adams apple".
During development (inside the womb) the thyroid gland originates in the back of the tongue, but it normally migrates to the front of the neck before birth. Sometimes it fails to migrate properly and is located high in the neck or even in the back of the tongue (lingual thyroid). However, this is very rare. At other times it may migrate too far and ends up in the chest (this is also rare).
The thyroid gland is under the control of the pituitary gland. You can visualize the thyroid gland as a furnace and the pituitary gland as the thermostat. Thyroid hormones are like heat. When the heat gets back to the thermostat, it turns the thermostat off. As the room cools (the thyroid hormone levels drop), the thermostat turns back on (TSH increases) and the furnace produces more heat (thyroid hormones).
The function of the thyroid gland is to take the mineral iodine and convert it into two thyroid hormones called thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). A deficiency of iodine leads to decreased production of T3 and T4, enlarges the thyroid tissue and will cause the disease known as goitre. The major form of thyroid hormone in the blood is thyroxine (T4), which has a longer half-life than T3. The ratio of T4 to T3 released into the blood is roughly 20 to 1. T4 is converted to the active T3 (three to four times more potent than T4) within cells by the enzyme deiodinases (5'-iodinase).
The thyronines act on nearly every cell in the body. They act to increase the basal metabolic rate, affect protein synthesis, help regulate long bone growth (synergy with growth hormone) and neuronal maturation, and increase the body's sensitivity to catecholamines (such as adrenaline) by permissiveness. The thyroid hormones are essential to proper development and differentiation of all cells in the human body. These hormones also regulate protein, fat, and carbohydrate metabolism, affecting how human cells use energetic compounds. They also stimulate vitamin metabolism. Numerous physiological and pathological stimuli influence thyroid hormone synthesis.

Health Conditions
- Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid becomes overactive and releases too much T3 and T4 into the blood. Another name for it is thyrotoxicosis.
- Graves' disease, a form of thyroiditis, or inflammation of the thyroid, is when a person suffers some or all the symptoms of hyperthyroidism
- Hypothyroidism can happen when the thyroid is not doing its job producing enough T3 and T4. Or it can be the result of the pituitary or hypothalamus failing to secrete enough hormone to keep the 'hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid-axis' working adequately.
- Hashimoto's disease occurs when the thyroid itself fails.
Suggestions To Strengthen
- If you have nerve issues, you lack energy, you do not heal well from injuries, or have low immune function (get sick too often), you are probably iodine deficient. A home remedy test is to apply some drops of Lugol's iodine to your skin (generally enough to cover 3 square inches). It will leave a stain. If the stain is gone in less than 24 hours, you probably need iodine to help your thyroid. The faster the stain fades, the more deficient you are.
- Engage in more physical activity to keep your mind/body balanced and to keep your mind from being so "busy".
- Learn to release pent up emotions with Tai Chi, Chi Gong, etc.
- Use uplifting mantras that help with feeling of self pity (poor me, why me) you may have.
- Find the job, career or vocation that makes your heart happy. The thyroid weak person needs to have a purpose.
- Be close to someone who thinks you are important and makes you feel that way.
