Alopecia

Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss or baldness. It is further classified by type or cause.
  • Androgenetic alopecia (also called pattern baldness) usually occurs due to loss of specific types of hormones called androgens.
  • Alopecia areata is a type of hair loss that tends to occur in spots, as opposed to the pattern baldness.
  • Alopecia areata monolocularis means that hair loss occurs in one spot only, usually on the head.
  • Alopecia areata multilocularis means that hair loss occurs in several spots, and loss may not be limited to the head.
  • Trichotillomania ia a condition where people have an impulse to pluck out their own hair.

Thyroid imbalance may also cause hair loss. Fungal conditions like ringworm may also result in alopecia. Eczema, sudden stress and prolonged illness that depletes the immune system can cause hair loss. Many autoimmune diseases, like lupus and AIDS can cause hair loss as well. In addition, certain medications can cause hair loss, particularly the case with drugs used for chemotherapy.

NOTE. If someone comes to my office asking for assistance in hair loss, if it is not pattern baldness (genetic), it is almost certainly caused by a thyroid problem (more the case with women), worms in the body & severe malnutrition, but the number one reason for hair loss is DHT build-up (particularly the case with male hair loss, including the patterns baldness). My Vitamin D3 formula addresses the DHT issue very well. If the hair loss was induced by medication, chemo or autoimmune issues, you will need the appropriate detox remedy.

Each part of the head represents a different part of the body, so the pattern or location of your hair loss may dictate what system needs additional attention. The top of the head (forehead to crown) tends to indicate digestion and elimination weakness (Intestines). Add the Digestive Aid with each meal and IC-1 if you have elimination problems. Hair problems on the crown indicates Adrenal imbalance. You may need a good Omega-3 (Krill Oil is my favorite) supplement along with Adrenal support. General hair loss or thinning all over indicates Thyroid weakness, while receding along the forehead may be more of a kidney weakness.

HOME REMEDY: Washing your hair with cold water is a very good remedy for caring your scalp (rather than hot). Rub your scalp vigorously when you wash your hair, it's the best remedy to activate the sebaceous glands and promote blood circulation. If you have oily skin and hair, it often means you do not break down animal fats and proteins well. If you seriously want to re-grow hair, consider an organic vegetarian diet (dairy free). Additionally, use shampoo and other hair products that are petroleum free. There are many home remedies listed on the internet if you do a search. From rubbing onion on your head to chicken poop! None thus far I can substantiate with high consistent results, but most are quite safe if you want to try them.
